Golden Globe Predictions (Film Categories)
I enjoy the golden globes. I know they don’t mean as much as the Oscars, but they are a lot of fun. It’s great to see TV favourites honoured alongside cinema.
So here are my predictions* for the film categories (guesses* really)
Best Picture: Drama
The Descendants
The Help
Hugo
The Ides of March
Moneyball
War Horse
What will win: The Descendants
What I’d like to see win: Hugo or The Descendants
Best Picture: Comedy or Musical
50/50
The Artist
Bridesmaids
Midnight In Paris
My Week With Marilyn
What will win: The Artist
What I’d like to see win: I’ve only seen Midnight in Paris and Bridesmaids out of this list so I don’t have strong feelings. It might be fun to see Bridesmaids win.
Best Director
Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
George Clooney, The Ides of March
Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist
Alexander Payne, The Descendants
Martin Scorsese, Hugo
Who will win: Michael Hazanavicius
Who I’d like to see win: Martin Scorsese
Best Actor: Drama
George Clooney – The Descendants
Michael Fassbender – Shame
Leonardo DiCaprio – J. Edgar
Ryan Gosling – The Ides of March
Brad Pitt – Moneyball
Who will win: George Clooney
Who I’d like to see win: It would be nice to see the Globes step out and award Fassbender, but I can’t see it happening.
Best Actress: Drama
Glenn Close - Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis - The Help
Rooney Mara - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Meryl Streep - The Iron Lady
Tilda Swinton - We Need To Talk About Kevin
Who will win: Meryl Streep
Who I’d like to see win: I haven’t seen much in this list so no strong opinions either way. I wouldn’t be surprised if Viola Davis wins here either.
Best Actor: Comedy or Musical
Jean Dujardin - The Artist
Brendan Gleeson - The Guard
Joseph Gordon-Levitt - 50/50
Ryan Gosling - Crazy, Stupid, Love
Owen Wilson - Midnight in Paris
Who will win: Jean Juardin
Who I’d like to see win: Ryan Gosling’s abs
Best Actress: Comedy or Musical
Jodie Foster - Carnage
Kate Winslet - Carnage
Charlize Theron - Young Adult
Kristen Wiig - Bridesmaids
Michelle Williams - My Week With Marilyn
Who will win: Michelle Williams
Who I’d like to see win: Kirsten Wiig just for being so witty. I love this lady.
Best Supporting Actor
Kenneth Branagh - My Week With Marilyn
Albert Brooks - Drive
Jonah Hill - Moneyball
Viggo Mortensen − A Dangerous Method
Christopher Plummer - Beginners
Who will win: Christopher Plummer
Who I’d like to see win: Albert Brooks. He just did bad so very very well.
Best Supporting Actress
Berenice Bejo - The Artist
Jessica Chastain - The Help
Octavia Spencer - The Help
Shailene Woodley - The Descendants
Janet McTeer - Albert Nobbs
Who will win: Octavia Spencer
Who I’d like to see win: Jessica Chastain – more a “body of work” award than just for her performance in this one film
Best Foreign Language Film
A Separation (Iran)
The Flowers of War (China)
The Kid with the Bike (Belgium)
In the Land of Blood and Honey
The Skin I Live In (Spain)
What will win: A Separation
What I’d like to see win: I loved A Kid with the Bike, but I don’t think it has a shot here. The globes could go all crazy on us and award Angelina Jolie’s In the Land of Blood and Honey. They do like to honour the people they love.
Best Screenplay
Midnight in Paris
The Ides of March
The Artist
The Descendants
Moneyball
What will win: The Descendants
What I’d like to see win: I’d be happy with The Descendants taking this one. Moneyball could be a surprise winner here.
Best Original Score
Ludovic Bource - The Artist
Abel Korzeniowski - W.E
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Howard Shore - Hugo
John Williams - War Horse
What will win: The Artist
What I’d like to see win: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Best Animated Film
The Adventures of Tintin
Arthur Christmas
Cars 2
Puss in Boots
Rango
What will win: Rango
What I’d like to see win: Arthur Christmas. It doesn’t have a chance but I honestly believe it was the best animated film of the year. Tintin has an outside shot at taking this.
